LEH pupils design, build and race their own electric vehicle
On Sunday 7 June, our Year 10 Greenpower team, FlashDrive, travelled to Bedford Autodrome to compete in the Greenpower Formula 24 competition. Representing the school were Izzy, Sooah, Amelie, Olivia and Alexandra, who raced in an electric car that they had built themselves with support from our wonderful Friends of LEH.
Greenpower Formula 24 challenges students to design, build and race electric vehicles, developing valuable skills in engineering, teamwork, problem-solving and project management. After months of preparation, the team was excited to put their hard work to the test on race day.
Competing against schools from across the country, FlashDrive completed both races successfully, achieving one of the most important goals in motorsport: finishing! While several teams experienced technical difficulties and breakdowns during the event, the LEH car ran reliably throughout the day, demonstrating the team’s careful design, preparation and attention to detail.
The team completed 18 laps (22 miles) in Race 1, finishing 27th out of 40 competitors. In Race 2, they improved their performance, completing 20 laps (24.6 miles) and securing 26th place out of 35 teams. Their fastest speed of the day was 18.7 mph, while their best lap time dipped below four minutes at an impressive 3 minutes and 56 seconds.
The event was physically demanding, with drivers spending long periods maintaining throttle control around the circuit, but the team showed resilience, determination and excellent teamwork throughout.
With no breakdowns and consistent performances across both races, FlashDrive can be proud of their achievements. The team currently sits 176th out of 236 teams nationally and is already looking ahead to the next event in September, where they hope to build on their success and make their car even faster.
Congratulations to all involved on a fantastic achievement!
