Form 1 have been taking an exciting journey back in time to explore the fascinating world of Ancient Egypt, with their learning extending from the classroom all the way to the British Museum.
Just before half term, the girls enjoyed a special Ancient Egyptian afternoon, bringing their studies to life through an immersive afternoon of activities and discovery. It was wonderful to see them embracing the experience with such enthusiasm, and their fantastic costumes certainly helped to transport everyone back to the time of pharaohs, pyramids and mummies.
Throughout the afternoon, the girls were full of questions and keen to find out more about what everyday life might have been like in Ancient Egypt. One subject that particularly captured their imaginations was mummification. While many already knew something about the process, they quickly discovered that there was much more to it than they had realised.
The girls were fascinated by the careful and lengthy process involved in preparing a body for burial, including some details that came as quite a surprise!
Reflecting on what they had learnt, one pupil said:
“I thought I knew all about mummification, but I was wrong. I did not know that they anointed the body with oils!”
Another was amazed to discover just how long the process could take:
“I didn’t realise the process took 70 days.”
The afternoon also encouraged the girls to think beyond the facts and consider what life might actually have felt like thousands of years ago. One pupil reflected:
“I had not thought about what it would have been like to live as an Ancient Egyptian.”
Of course, not every discovery was quite so glamorous! Another memorable reaction was:
“I was surprised you had to remove the organs!”
The girls’ enthusiasm, curiosity and willingness to ask questions made the afternoon a wonderful way to deepen their classroom learning. A huge thank you must go to the staff team who put so much into making the experience possible and creating such an engaging afternoon for Form 1.
From the classroom to the British Museum
The adventure did not stop at half term. This week, Form 1 continued their exploration of Ancient Egypt with a visit to the British Museum.
Having spent time learning about the ancient civilisation in school, the trip gave the girls an exciting opportunity to encounter some of its history for themselves, including seeing the famous Rosetta Stone.
It was a wonderful continuation of their studies and a chance to connect what they had been learning in the classroom with objects from the ancient world.
It has certainly been a busy and rewarding few weeks for our young Egyptologists, filled with questions, discoveries and plenty of memorable moments.
We look forward to sharing more about Form 1’s busy but fulfilling day at the British Museum next week!
