For Louise Kingsley MBE, rowing has been a lifelong journey of leadership, teamwork and excellence. What began as one of the first members helping establish rowing at LEH has evolved into a remarkable career leading Britain’s most successful Olympic and Paralympic rowing programmes.

Awarded an MBE in the King’s New Year Honours List, Louise has spent more than two decades shaping the future of British rowing, guiding athletes to historic international success while inspiring the next generation to achieve their potential.

Where it all began

Long before she was leading Olympic campaigns, Louise was helping to lay the foundations of rowing at LEH. As one of the early instigators of the school’s rowing club, she played an important role in establishing a partnership with Hampton Boat Club, creating opportunities that continue to benefit generations of LEH rowers today.

That early experience ignited a passion for the sport that would define her career, “I feel very humbled to have been honoured in this way and think of it as recognition of the hard work and dedication that goes into the GB Rowing Team from all of staff, athletes and volunteers.”

For Louise, rowing has always been about collective success rather than individual recognition.

From classroom to career

After leaving LEH, Louise built an exceptional career in high-performance sport, progressing from coach to one of the most influential leaders in British rowing.

Over more than 20 years, she has helped develop athletes at every stage of the performance pathway before becoming the first woman to lead British Rowing’s World Class Performance Programme since Lottery funding transformed elite sport in 1997.

She has also served as Team Leader for Great Britain’s Paralympic rowing squad across four Paralympic Games, helping establish one of the world’s most successful para rowing programmes.

Her leadership reached another milestone at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The GB Rowing Team delivered its most successful overseas Olympic performance, with 36 of 42 athletes winning medals, while Great Britain’s para rowing squad topped the medal table with three gold medals and one silver.

These achievements reflect years of careful planning, collaboration and a commitment to creating environments where athletes can perform at their very best.

An education beyond the syllabus

Louise believes the values that shaped her career began during her time at LEH. Rowing taught her resilience, discipline and teamwork, while school encouraged her to embrace leadership and seize opportunities with confidence.

Those qualities have remained central throughout her career, whether coaching athletes, developing performance programmes or leading teams on the world’s biggest sporting stage.

For Louise, success has always depended on bringing together athletes, coaches, volunteers and support staff around a shared ambition.

Leading teams to achieve extraordinary things

Although medals are the most visible measure of success, Louise sees her greatest achievement in the people behind them.

Creating pathways for athletes to thrive, developing coaches and fostering a culture of excellence have become defining features of her leadership.

Her journey demonstrates that the strongest leaders are those who empower others to succeed.

From helping establish rowing at LEH to leading one of Britain’s most successful Olympic sports, Louise has shown what is possible when vision, teamwork and determination come together.

What would Louise’s advice be to current LEH students?

Never underestimate where a school opportunity might lead.

The experiences you embrace today, whether in sport, academics or the arts, can shape your future in ways you cannot yet imagine. Success is rarely achieved alone, so value teamwork, support those around you and celebrate every achievement as a collective effort.
