Jay has enjoyed an extraordinary career at the forefront of journalism, broadcasting and the creative industries. Now Creative Director, Europe at Apple TV, she has held some of the most influential positions in British broadcasting, having led three terrestrial public service broadcasters. Throughout her career, she has championed bold ideas, nurtured creative talent and played a pivotal role in bringing some of television’s most innovative and acclaimed programmes to audiences.
Her commissioning credits read like a roll call of modern television favourites, including Sherlock, Luther, Black Mirror, Gogglebox, First Dates, Derry Girls, Slow Horses, Bad Sisters and Hijack. Behind these hugely successful programmes are Jay’s instincts for spotting original ideas, taking creative risks and giving talented people the opportunity to tell compelling stories.
Her achievements extend well beyond television. Jay is Chair of the British Film Institute and Chair of the Hay Festival, continuing to make a significant contribution to the UK’s cultural and creative landscape. She was awarded an OBE for services to broadcasting in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the industry.
For our LEH community, this promises to be a particularly special evening. As a former pupil, Jay’s journey offers a fascinating example of where curiosity, ambition, creativity and courage can lead. Her career also provides an opportunity to reflect on the rapidly changing world of television and the wider creative industries, from traditional broadcasting to the global streaming landscape and the new opportunities emerging through technology.
