Lower 6 Medical Student Wins Competition with Creative Design Exploring the Science of Empathy
We are delighted to congratulate our wonderfully creative Lower 6 student Nadia, whose artwork has been selected to appear on the front cover of The Mentor Magazine , a national publication dedicated to healthcare students.
Nadia entered a competition during the Easter holidays, when participants were invited to create an original cover design based on the theme of empathy. Combining creativity with scientific research, Nadia produced a striking piece of artwork that explored not only the emotional significance of empathy but also the biological processes associated with it.
As part of her preparation, Nadia researched the hormones and chemicals that can be released when people experience empathy, compassion and positive social connection. Inspired by these findings, she incorporated scientific concepts into her design, creating an artwork that successfully blended medicine, psychology and visual communication. The result was a thoughtful and engaging cover that stood out among the competition entries.
Reflecting on her achievement, Nadia explained that she wanted her artwork to represent both the emotional and scientific dimensions of empathy. By investigating the links between human behaviour and biological responses, she was able to develop a concept that was both visually appealing and intellectually informed.
Competitions such as this provide students with valuable opportunities to apply their learning beyond the classroom. Nadia’s success demonstrates how creativity, curiosity and independent research can come together to produce exceptional work. Her achievement also highlights the importance of inter-disciplinary thinking, drawing on ideas from science, medicine and art to communicate a complex theme in an accessible and engaging way.
Having artwork selected for publication is a significant accomplishment, particularly in a field connected to medicine and healthcare, where effective visual communication plays an important role in education and public engagement. Nadia’s design not only met the brief but also offered a unique perspective on empathy, a quality that remains central to patient care and medical practice.
We are incredibly proud of Nadia’s achievement and look forward to seeing her artwork featured on the magazine’s front cover. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition of creativity, research skills and artistic talent.
