LEH Crew Makes a Commanding Start at Henley Royal Regatta

Confident opening-round victory over Winter Park sets up Friday showdown with Chicago Rowing Federation

LEH enjoyed a superb start to their Henley Royal Regatta campaign today, producing a composed and commanding performance to defeat Winter Park by nearly two lengths in the opening round of the Prince Philip Challenge Trophy.

Although there was little to separate the two crews during the opening stages of the race, LEH quickly established themselves as the stronger crew. After a closely contested first minute, the girls began to increase the pressure through the second and third minutes, making the most of their rhythm and speed as they passed the first timing markers. From there, they steadily extended their advantage, taking control of the middle section of the course before delivering a decisive finish through the iconic Steward’s Enclosure.

Crossing the line by clear water, it was a textbook Henley performance and a mature display from a crew containing just two athletes with previous Henley racing experience.

The victory is a testament to the hard work and determination shown by the squad throughout the season, with every crew member contributing to an outstanding team performance. Representing LEH in the winning boat were, from cox to bow: Amytis (Lower 6), Maddie (Upper 6), Hanna (Upper 6), Lia (Upper 6), Millie (Upper 6), Amelie (Lower 6), Lexie (Lower 6), Lola (Upper 5) and Tabby (Upper 5).

With the first hurdle successfully cleared, the crew now has a well-earned rest day on Thursday. The rowers will complete a light outing on the Henley course before focusing on recovery and preparation ahead of Friday’s second-round race against the Chicago Rowing Federation. The extra day provides an ideal opportunity to recharge both physically and mentally before returning to one of the most prestigious stages in school rowing.

There is also an exciting additional LEH interest at Henley today. In a surprise twist, one of the school’s rowing coaches will be taking to the water to compete in the Visitors’ Challenge Cup, with racing scheduled this morning. While the girls enjoy their rest day, there will still be plenty for the LEH community to follow as the regatta continues.

Their confident and disciplined display has set the tone for the rest of the week, and everyone at LEH will be looking forward to cheering them on when they return to racing on Friday in pursuit of a place in the next round.
