German Language Assistant Franzi Bachmann wins at Henley Women’s Regatta just five years after learning to row at LEH.
There are few stages in rowing more prestigious than Henley Women’s Regatta, making Franzi Bachmann’s recent victory even more remarkable.
Our German Language Assistant was crowned champion in the Aspirational Lightweight Single Sculls after an outstanding series of performances, winning every race by clear water before receiving her trophy from Olympic gold medallist and World Champion, Lauren Henry.
What makes Franzi’s achievement even more inspiring is where her rowing journey began.
She first learnt to row as an adult at LEH Boat Club in 2021. Taking her first tentative strokes in the school’s training boat, Ripple, she recalls needing the boat to be held on a lead rope from the landing stage to stop her drifting away, a memory that still brings a smile and one many LEH rowers will recognise.
From those early sessions, Franzi quickly developed a passion for the sport. She represented LEH Boat Club at local regattas and head races during 2022 and 2023 before moving to Kingston Rowing Club, where she has continued to develop her racing career.
Despite now competing for Kingston, Franzi remains a valued member of the LEH rowing community. At regattas throughout the season, she and LEH crews continue to support one another, a reflection of the strong bonds formed through the club.
That support was never more evident than during the Henley Women’s Regatta final, when the cheers of the LEH First Eight echoed down the course as Franzi powered towards victory.
Reflecting on her success, Franzi is quick to acknowledge the encouragement she has received along the way. She is particularly grateful to colleagues across the Modern Foreign Languages Department, whose understanding and support have enabled her to balance elite competition with her teaching commitments, and LEH’s amazing rowing coaches.
Her story is a wonderful example of what can be achieved through determination, resilience, and a willingness to embrace new challenges. It also demonstrates that learning never stops, whether in the classroom, on the water or beyond.
Everyone at LEH is immensely proud of Franzi’s achievement. Her journey from complete beginner to Henley Women’s Regatta champion is an inspiration to our pupils and a reminder that bold ambitions, hard work, and the support of a strong community can lead to extraordinary success.
