Historic Performance Secures Henley Royal Regatta Qualification and Marks Major Milestone for LEH Boat Club
LEH’s rowers delivered an unforgettable performance at Henley Women’s Regatta, one of the most prestigious events in the rowing calendar and a highlight of the summer racing season.
Representing LEH were both J16 and Senior crews, with two quads entered in the J18 Quad event and two eights competing in the highly competitive J18 Eights category. Following the qualifying time trials, the LEH 1st Eight successfully secured their place in the knockout stages, while the remaining crews narrowly missed qualification. A special mention must go to the J16 Eight, who produced an outstanding performance and were unlucky to miss out as the fastest non-qualifying crew.
Once racing moved into the head-to-head rounds, the LEH 1st Eight demonstrated determination, composure and exceptional racing skill. Their campaign began with a convincing victory over Putney High School on Saturday afternoon, earning them a place in Sunday’s racing. They followed this with another impressive win against Emanuel School, setting up a highly anticipated semi-final against Latymer Upper School.
What followed was one of the most dramatic
races of the entire regatta.
At one stage, LEH found themselves half a length behind their opponents. Refusing to give in, the crew dug deep and mounted a remarkable comeback. Stroke by stroke, they closed the gap before rowing through Latymer Upper School in the closing stages to secure victory by just 0.4 seconds. Spectators lining the famous Henley course commented on the crew’s composure under pressure and their ability to execute such a determined and disciplined race plan when it mattered most.
The victory booked LEH’s place in the final of the J18 Eights event, the first time in 13 years.
The victory booked LEH’s place in the final of the J18 Eights event, the first time in 13 years that an LEH 1st Eight has reached a Henley Women’s Regatta final. The achievement represents a significant milestone for the Boat Club and reflects years of hard work, dedication and continued progress within the rowing programme.
In the final, the crew faced a formidable Headington School boat. Despite producing another strong performance, LEH were ultimately beaten by an exceptional crew that went on to break the course record by an astonishing five seconds.
While the result did not bring home the title, the weekend will be remembered as a landmark success for LEH rowing. Reaching the final of such a prestigious regatta is a remarkable accomplishment in itself and highlights the strength and ambition of the current squad.
As a result of their outstanding performance, the LEH 1st Eight has earned pre-qualification for Henley Royal Regatta, one of the most iconic rowing events in the world. The draw will be announced shortly, with the crew expected to begin their campaign next week.
Congratulations to all the athletes who represented LEH with such distinction, and especially to the 1st Eight: Amytis, Maddie , Hanna, Lia, Millie, Amelie, Lexie, Lola and Tabby.
The entire LEH community wishes them every success as they prepare to take on the next challenge at Henley Royal Regatta.
