Gold success for Sofya as Year 8 students impress at St Mary’s University Poetry Live competition
It has been a truly memorable day for the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) department at LEH, with students celebrating success both in the classroom and on the competition stage.
Three talented Year 8 students travelled to St Mary’s University to take part in its Poetry Live competition which began with an inspiring and thought-provoking conference led by Dr Gianfranco Conti, one of the UK’s leading voices in language education. His engaging presentation provided valuable insights into effective language learning and reinforced the importance of developing confidence, fluency and cultural understanding through the study of languages.
Representing LEH with pride were Amna in German, Alara in Spanish and Sofya in French. Each student delivered a memorised poetry recital in their chosen language, demonstrating impressive linguistic ability, excellent pronunciation and remarkable stage presence.
Performing before a packed hall is a challenge for even the most experienced speakers. To do so in a language other than one’s own requires exceptional preparation, confidence and courage. All three students rose to the occasion and delivered their performances brilliantly, earning admiration from judges and audience members alike.
The evening’s standout achievement came from Sofya, who was awarded the Gold medal for her performance of La Tour Eiffel. Her success reflects not only her dedication and hard work but also the strength of language learning at LEH.
The achievements of Amna, Alara and Sofya are a wonderful example of the enthusiasm and commitment shown by students across the MFL department. Their performances highlighted the value of language learning in building confidence, communication skills and cultural awareness.
Congratulations to all three girls on their outstanding accomplishments and for being such excellent ambassadors for LEH. They have done themselves, their teachers and the school proud.
Languages at LEH
We believe that mastering languages is more than an academic achievement; it’s a gateway to the world. Our rich and supportive language programme empowers pupils to communicate with confidence in new languages. As their fluency grows, so does their ability to connect, collaborate and think across cultures, skills that are vital in a globalised world.
Language lessons at LEH are designed to challenge and inspire. They nurture resilience, adaptability and self-assurance, while complementing every other subject from the Humanities to the Sciences. Through languages, students gain deeper insight into global issues, international perspectives, and their place in a broader world.
