Encouraging a love of reading, curiosity and academic exploration across the curriculum
Reading is one of the most powerful ways to explore new ideas, develop knowledge and discover new interests. To celebrate and encourage reading across the curriculum, we are delighted to launch HALE Reading Stars, an exciting new House competition for Key Stage 3 students.
The brainchild of our Humanities, Art, Languages and English (HALE) team, the initiative has been designed to inspire students to read widely and engage with a broad range of subjects beyond the classroom. Through HALE Reading Stars, students will have the opportunity to explore books, articles and other reading materials linked to a variety of academic disciplines, helping them to broaden their understanding and develop a lifelong love of learning.
Each student will receive a Reading Stars logbook in which they will record and summarise the books and articles they have read. These summaries will encourage students to reflect on their reading, think critically about the ideas they encounter and make meaningful connections between different subjects. Every entry will be reviewed and signed off by a subject teacher, providing students with valuable recognition for their efforts and achievements.
As students progress through the competition, they will work towards Bronze, Silver and Gold awards by reading across a range of HALE subjects. This structure encourages both consistency and variety, rewarding students who challenge themselves to explore new topics and perspectives.
House points will play an important role in the competition, with rewards given not only for the quantity of reading completed but also for the quality of students’ engagement with the material. Thoughtful summaries, insightful reflections and evidence of genuine curiosity will all contribute to success.
HALE Reading Stars promises to be a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their reading habits, expand their horizons and contribute to their House. We look forward to seeing our Reading Stars shine throughout the year and celebrating their achievements. Happy reading!
Humanities, Art, Literature & English (HALE) at LEH
At LEH, the Humanities, Art, Literature & English (HALE) subjects lie at the heart of a rich and rounded education. Through subjects such as History, English Language & Literature, Geography, Latin & Classical Civilisation and Politics and more, students explore the complexity of human experience – past and present, near and far. We encourage critical thinking, thoughtful debate, and deep questioning, helping students to understand the world and their place within it. Whether analysing historical sources and fictional texts, debating ethical dilemmas, or investigating global challenges, our students develop the analytical skills, empathy, and intellectual curiosity that will stay with them for life.
