STEM subjects offer a dynamic blend of theory and practical exploration. From uncovering the secrets of the universe to solving
real-world problems, our Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics courses equip students with the skills and curiosity to shape the future.
STEM
Biology
Biology is a dynamic and rapidly evolving subject, central to tackling many of today’s global challenges. From understanding gut health and the threat of emerging pandemics to exploring the environmental impact of nanoparticles, Biology is highly relevant to the modern world.
If you’re curious about the living world, enjoy scientific enquiry and practical investigation, and are ready to ask big questions – even if they lead to even bigger ones, then Biology could be for you! A good grasp of Maths and strong GCSE results are also essential for success in this subject.
Chemistry
Chemistry helps us understand everything from how medicines work and why materials behave the way they do, to the chemical reactions that shape our world. If you choose Chemistry, you’ll explore abstract concepts, carry out practical experiments, and develop a deeper appreciation of the science behind everyday life.
Chemistry is essential for a wide range of university courses, including Chemistry, Medicine, Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Geology, and Food Science. A strong GCSE in Maths is important, and if you’re considering Chemistry at university, A level Maths is often required.
Computer Science
If you’re fascinated by how technology works and want to be part of shaping the future, Computer Science is an exciting and highly relevant subject. At A level, you’ll go far beyond everyday tech use—developing a deep understanding of programming, algorithms, data structures, and the principles that underpin modern computing. You’ll also explore the ethical and societal implications of technology, from artificial intelligence to cybersecurity. Computer Science builds logical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills—preparing you for a wide range of university courses and careers in one of the fastest-growing global industries.
Mathematics & Further Mathematics
Mathematics is a fascinating and intellectually rewarding subject which plays a crucial role in advancing science, technology, economics, and the social sciences. At A level, you’ll sharpen your logical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving abilities, skills that are highly valued across countless careers. Whether you’re interested in engineering, finance, computing, or data science, Mathematics provides a strong foundation and opens the door to a wide range of prestigious university courses and future opportunities.
Further Mathematics is a challenging and rewarding A level that builds on the foundations of Mathematics, exploring more advanced concepts and techniques. It’s ideal for students who enjoy problem-solving and want to deepen their mathematical understanding.
Physics
Physics is a dynamic, ever-evolving subject that helps us understand and shape the world around us, from the tiniest particles to the vastness of space. Without Physics, we wouldn’t have technologies like smartphones, satellites, medical imaging, or electric vehicles. At A level, you’ll explore a broad and fascinating range of topics, developing a deep understanding of the laws that govern the universe and honing your ability to think logically, analyse problems, and question assumptions.
If you enjoy asking ‘why’ and ‘how’ and take satisfaction in applying scientific thinking to real-world challenges, Physics is a brilliant choice. It’s a vital foundation for degrees in Physics, Engineering, Astrophysics, and more. While you don’t have to take A level Mathematics to study Physics, we strongly recommend it – as well as Further Maths for those aiming for the most competitive university courses.
Product Design
Product Design is perfect for students who are curious about how things are made and passionate about shaping the world through creativity and innovation. If you enjoy solving real-world problems and imagining new, purposeful products, this course will challenge and excite you. You’ll explore materials, processes, and the impact of design on society, while developing the skills to bring your ideas to life, from initial concept through to final prototype. This course is perfect for anyone who has a strong interest in designing for a better, smarter future.
Psychology
Psychology explores how we think, feel, and behave, asking fascinating questions such as: ‘how memory works’, ‘how early attachments shape later relationships’, ‘what causes mental disorders’, and ‘how social change happens’. It’s a subject that combines science, research, and discussion, developing skills in analysis, critical thinking, and communication. If you’re curious about human behaviour and want to understand the mind from a scientific perspective, Psychology is an exciting and rewarding choice. It pairs well with a wide range of A level subjects, including Biology, Sociology, English, Philosophy, and Maths, offering excellent preparation for a variety of university courses and careers.
STEM Scholarships that Open Doors
Our WELL STEM Sixth Form Scholarship sponsored by Well Logistics Ltd supports exceptional and passionate students with funding towards STEM-related summer courses and access to a wide network of inspiring people and projects. Scholars also act as mentors and ambassadors, helping to foster a thriving STEM culture across the school.
Isabelle, Former STEM ScholarBeing a STEM Scholar at LEH opened up opportunities for my time in school and my future. I met inspirational people like Moderna’s Chief Development Officer, explored astrophysics through university-led programmes, and led younger pupils through their own projects. It taught me the power of science communication and strengthened my resolve to keep championing STEM for girls.
