At LEH, the Humanities lie at the heart of a rich and rounded education. Through subjects such as History, English Language & Literature, Geography, Latin & Classical Civilisation and Politics and more, students explore the complexity of human experience – past and present, near and far. We encourage critical thinking, thoughtful debate, and deep questioning, helping students to understand the world and their place within it. Whether analysing historical sources and fictional texts, debating ethical dilemmas, or investigating global challenges, our students develop the analytical skills, empathy, and intellectual curiosity that will stay with them for life.
Humanities
Classics - Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation
Studying Latin and Greek at LEH sharpens pupils’ minds, building attention to detail, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Latin enriches vocabulary and deepens understanding of grammar, enhancing communication and making it easier to learn other languages. Through language study, pupils also explore the ancient world – its myths, religion, history, literature, and art – developing a broad cultural awareness.
Classical Civilisation brings together elements of history, literature, philosophy, and the arts. Pupils examine the beliefs, politics, and societal structures of the ancient world through themes such as war, gender, religion, and power. From analysing sources to evaluating big ideas, Classics offers an education in critical thinking and cultural insight giving pupils the confidence and context to shape the future.
English Language & Literature
At LEH, English Language and Literature are taught in an integrated and inspiring way, enabling students to become thoughtful readers, confident writers, and articulate speakers. Pupils explore a rich variety of texts and genres that deepen their understanding of language, identity, and human experience. Pupils develop their ability to analyse a wide range of non-fiction and literary non-fiction texts – from journalism and speeches to travel writing and autobiographies. They learn to understand how writers craft meaning and influence audiences, while also refining their own voice through imaginative and transactional writing tasks.
Beyond the classroom, pupils enjoy a rich programme of enrichment opportunities from theatre trips and debating competitions to creative writing workshops and national literary events, all designed to foster a lifelong love of language and literature.
Geography
Geography equips pupils with a wide range of transferable skills, including analytical thinking, spatial reasoning, and problem-solving. Through map interpretation, data analysis, independent research, and creative presentations, students explore how the world works, from natural hazards to global inequality. It’s a subject for the curious, the critical, and those who want to make a difference.
As a bridge between the sciences and humanities, Geography brings together the big questions of our time: climate change, urbanisation, migration, and global trade. It helps pupils understand how people shape the planet and how the planet shapes us. With its real-world relevance, opportunities for debate, and global outlook, Geography offers a dynamic and exciting lens through which to explore today’s world and imagine tomorrow’s.
History
Studying History gives pupils the tools to question the world around them. They learn to evaluate evidence, detect bias, and think critically, skills that are essential in life, not just in the classroom. Whether researching original sources, debating interpretations, or writing persuasive essays, our girls become confident communicators and thoughtful analysts, developing a deep understanding of people, events, and the forces that have shaped society.
History is a subject that connects everything, from art and literature to economics, politics and even science. It helps pupils make sense of today’s world by exploring the complexities of the past. For those who love asking ‘why?’, who enjoy a good debate, or who want to understand how ideas, cultures and systems evolve over time, History is a fascinating and intellectually rich subject.
Politics
Politics is the study of power, influence, and the decisions that shape our world. Pupils explore how governments operate, how policies are formed, and how political ideas and ideologies impact everyday life. From elections and protests to international relations and diplomacy, Politics helps pupils make sense of current events and global challenges and empowers them to engage with the world around them.
Studying Politics develops skills that are valuable across countless careers: critical thinking, debate, research, and persuasive communication. Pupils learn to dissect complex issues, evaluate different perspectives, and build strong, evidence-based arguments. Politics connects with every other subject, from philosophy and economics to science and the arts, offering students a dynamic, real-world education that prepares them to lead, influence and shape the future.
Psychology
Psychology offers our students vital insight into human behaviour, a skill increasingly valued across industries, from healthcare to AI. Taught through a research-rich approach, students analyse real-world phenomena and explore how scientific thinking applies to everyday life.
Religious Studies
Religious Studies challenges pupils to think deeply about the world around them. Through discussion, debate, and critical analysis, students explore big questions about morality, existence, human experience, and belief. They learn to apply ethical thinking to real-world issues – from medical advancements to global politics – and develop the ability to construct clear, reasoned arguments.
Studying religious beliefs and practices builds empathy, curiosity, and cultural awareness. Pupils are encouraged to examine diverse perspectives and reflect on how faith shapes identity, values, and society. Religious Studies not only enrich students’ understanding of other subjects like science, history, and psychology, but also equip them with the skills to think independently, communicate thoughtfully, and engage with the world with insight and respect.
