Celebrating Diversity & Inclusion: Black History Month

As part of our ongoing commitment to celebrating diversity and inclusion, we were proud to mark Black History Month with a series of engaging and meaningful events across the school. These activities provided our students with opportunities to learn about, reflect on, and celebrate the rich contributions of Black individuals to British history and culture. Highlights from this year’s celebrations included:

  • Form Time Reflections: Students explored John Agard’s powerful poem Checking Out Me History, sparking thoughtful discussions about identity, history, and representation.

  • Inspirational Assemblies: Our Junior and Senior School assemblies focused on the Bristol Bus Boycott, a pivotal moment in the UK civil rights movement. Led by our Lower 6 Inclusion Champions alongside the Junior Head and Deputy Head Girl, the assemblies highlighted the courageous activism of Paul Stephenson, whose leadership helped bring about lasting change in the fight against racial discrimination.

  • Treasure Hunts: Thirds (Year 7) and Junior School pupils took part in a fun and educational treasure hunt, discovering the stories and achievements of influential Black British figures.

  • Creative Bracelet Making: Pupils from both Junior and Senior Schools enjoyed a hands-on session designing bracelets inspired by Afro-Caribbean colours and patterns, celebrating cultural expression through art.

  • Ready Steady Cook House Competition: Our House teams brought energy and flavour to the kitchen in a lively competition to create delicious jerk chicken wraps, embracing Caribbean culinary traditions.

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm and curiosity our students showed throughout these events. Black History Month has been a valuable opportunity to deepen understanding, celebrate heritage, and inspire future changemakers.
