¡Hola!
This February Half Term, 30 Spanish GCSE students embarked on a journey to Salamanca, Spain for 5 days of learning, culture and delicious food! One of our Spanish linguists, Gina tells us all about it:
“Upon landing in Madrid Barajas Airport, after travelling to the city of Salamanca, we were met with our wonderful host families. Shortly after, we headed out to the Plaza Mayor for some free time and a chance to familiarise ourselves with the lively, picturesque city. The rest of the weekend involved some delicious Churros con Chocolate, followed by a tour through the city, learning about the history of Salamanca; we were able to visit the building of the University of Salamanca, one of the oldest universities in the world. Amidst the magnificent architecture, we were even given some good luck for our exams by seeing the infamous frog hidden on the outside of the building! The evening took us to a movie theatre to watch Zootropolis 2 in Spanish, a certain challenge, but a great film nonetheless.
Lessons with Lola Languages School started from Monday- Thursday, which were engaging and definitely helpful in improving our skills and expanding our knowledge of Spanish culture. We were enriched by a variety of activities throughout the afternoons, including a tour of the Catedral de Salamanca, a flamenco workshop, a photo rally, a museum visit and a delicious paella night. However, the tapas experience and karaoke night, which involved a near-perfect rendition of Macarena by us and Señora Arrieta, was a definite highlight including some incredible dancing skills from all!
Before we knew it, we had reached our last day and it was time to say goodbye to our host families and head to the school for our final lessons. We then headed to the airport back home to Heathrow, with prizes given out to photo rally winners (my group won!), and special prizes for those who displayed outstanding skills and resilience throughout the trip. Beyond exquisite food and jaw-dropping views, we were able to put our Spanish skills into practice in real-life situations when asking for directions, talking to shop employees and conversing with our host families. We returned to London with endless photos, improved Spanish skills, and memories to last for a lifetime!”
