On Friday 21st November, LEH held the annual ISSP MUN (Independent State School Partnership Model United Nations) conference. There were two topics that were discussed between delegates – capital punishment and health.
Every pupil was randomly assigned to work with a delegate from another school to represent their allocated country. There were pupils from Hampton High, Orleans Park, Tolworth Girls, Hollyfield and Hampton School. Thirds pupil, Prabhleen gives us her account of the event:
“My assigned partner from another school and I immediately began researching and preparing a speech on how France viewed capital punishment ensuring we could present its opinions accurately to the whole committee. It was an interesting experience, encouraging us to work at speed, with accuracy and to carefully consider our word, for example, personal pronouns were not allowed to simulate real UN protocol formalities.
My favourite part was being able to interact with the other countries and learn to work with people from other schools. It felt like we were part of the real United Nations, making amendments and supporting those raised by other countries. I would like to thank the organisers of this event for giving me an opportunity to practise my public speaking and inspiring me to join MUN club in the future.”
